Several important drivers deriving from technological innovation push towards revised frames for innovation policies. Digitalization is one key element of this transformation, which affect innovation processes, societal changes and research practices as well, with the possibility of deep transformations and the rise of new inequalities between those understanding the opportunities of open innovation, and those not. The concept of ‘innovation ecosystems’ and new business model innovation are emerging, but the characteristics and the conditions for success are still largely unexplored.
